Things to Check Before Transferring
A balance transfer is only beneficial when the savings outweigh the costs.
Foreclosure / Prepayment Charge
Your existing lender may charge 1%β4% of the outstanding amount as a foreclosure fee. Factor this into your total savings calculation.
Processing Fee on New Loan
The new lender will charge a processing fee of 0.5%β2%. Ensure your total savings over remaining tenure exceed these upfront costs.
Remaining Tenure
Balance transfer is most beneficial when you have more than 12 months (ideally 24+ months) remaining. In the early months of a loan, most of the EMI goes to interest, so savings are higher.
CIBIL Score Impact
A hard inquiry from the new lender will temporarily reduce your CIBIL score by 5β10 points. This is normal and typically recovers within 3β6 months.
